Albert and I with Harry & Pam in Quebec City, June 2008. We were invited at the last minute to fill two empty seats at "Une Soirée au Musée" - a UNICEF benefit organized by the artist Michel Bell and his wife Nathalie. That's Romeo Dallaire behind Albert. I don't think it is a night either one of us will forget.
There are many of us out there.
We are not overtly political, or famous, or glamarous in any way.
By his songs, his words, his commitments, his humour, his life.
We listened.
And we know we are blessed because we did.
Probably the first site I remember finding on the internet belongs to Åke Holm in Sweden. A very extensive discography of not only Mr. B., but people he performed with.
His website also contains sections on memorabilia, videos, and books, etc.
Another long-standing site - in Japan, Haruo Funatsu first saw a Belafonte concert on TV when he was 10.
And live the next time he came to Japan. And like many of us - showed up to every concert he could after that.
And then there is YouTube - and Menno's collection of the best of the best...
Hard to imagine so many years ago that all this wonderfulness would be out there one day to simply click on.
A Discography of Original Recordings - The Musical Legacy of Harry Belafonte
Our friend Albert put an incredible amount of work into this site - which, according to the WayBackMachine was active from 2001 to 2022. It disappeared when the internet provider that hosted the site went out of business.
But I am honoured to say that the plan is to relocate all his work here - under our Canadian Tribute banner.
There are a few other sites I feel I should mention from way-back-when...
- If you looked up Mr. B. between, oh, 1998 and 2010-ish, my site would have been very close if not at the the top of the Google list. It was called in part, a-site-of-sites - simply, links to many others. I lost the domain name accidentally through a series of mishaps on my and my service-provider's side. What can I say - the internet was young.
- There was one from France - I think by a woman named Marie-France? Lost contact a long time ago, but if anyone knows anything, would be appreciated!
- and Frédérique Roberge (1927-2015) was a dedicated Mr. B follower - and I remember, quite a poet. She maintained a tribute site about Mr. B. on WebTV. Her passion ran deep, so this is my hat tip to her.
One of the greatest gifts I received when I hosted my first Mr. B. website was the introduction to and interaction with so many people from around the world.
Some of us had had the privilege of meeting him in person, some not. But there was a common bond between us.
I have my story, and it is dear to my heart. It is simple, yet I have learned through the years, nothing in comparison to so many others that are out there.
But that's part of the power that was Mr. B. He managed to make us ordinary folk feel like we were, in his eyes, special.
This is an open invite to anyone who wants to share their story. I think it helps paint a broader and more colourful portrait of this man who walked among the kings, the presidents, the famous - and us ordinary folk who he somehow got to sing his song.
